5.1 Check energy performance

What is this?

There are two aspects to checking energy performance. Firstly, performance should be routinely monitored and secondly, performance should be reported to senior management and also to others concerned with the energy performance of the organization.

How to implement

Monitor Energy Performance

Energy performance is monitored by routinely comparing actual energy consumption with expected energy consumption (baseline). The difference between the actual and expected energy consumption is the EnPI. You will need to monitor all the EnPIs established during the planning activities.

If there is a significant or unexpected value of an EnPI, then the cause should be investigated and corrective action taken. This can be for a positive or negative EnPI, i.e. when excess energy is consumed or when unexpectedly low quantity of energy is consumed. These deviations need to be recorded for future reference.

Report Energy Performance

Energy performance should be routinely reported within the organisation. This reporting will be to senior management and to others with a role in the EnMS and also to all other staff of the organisation. The reporting will include a summary of the EnPIs, actual consumption, actual cost, comparisons with budgets and other relevant information. The level of detail of the reporting will depend on the people being communicated with.

Energy performance will also be reviewed during the management review meetings.
